Obama Calls for Meeting with ICANN, Leading Domain Name Registrars

The Obama administration has invited representatives from ICANN and select domain name registrars to the White House for a meeting to discuss what can be done to stop illegal pharmacies that are selling medicine online.  Recently, LegitScript an online pharmacy verification service identified over 36,000 pharmacies online that did not meet it’s certification standard.

LegitScript said that a majority of registrars they contacted took immediate action to suspend the domain names that they identified as being used for illegal purposes.  However, several registrars including major U.S. registrars eNom.com and Moniker.com have not take any action regarding the domains.

Historically, eNom and Moniker have gone above and beyond to protect the rights of their customers (domain registrants) but this may a sticky spot for non compliant registrars.  On one side they are committed to acting in the best interest of their clients, on the other side the Obama administration is aware of possible illegal pharmacies and what domains they are using.

An invitation was sent out to ICANN and leading domain name registrars on August 13th via e-mail by White House Senior Adviser for Intellectual Property Enforcement Andrew J. Klein. The message urged recipients to attend the September 29th meeting with White House Cabinet officials including the intellectual property enforcement coordinator Victoria Espinel.
