Mail.com and its Userbase Changes Hands for “$50-$100 Million”

Jay Penske owner of the California based Mail.com Media Corporation (MMC) recently sold the Mail.com domain name and its 14 million e-mail users to United Internet AG, a huge German telecom and ISP.  The deal has been called a “strategic partnership” in which Mail.com e-mail accounts will still be handled by MMC on it’s platform until eventually being transferred to GMXMail, a subsidiary of United Internet AG.  Mail.com users will still get to keep their e-mail handles @mail.com but their accounts will soon be integrated into the GMX.com platform. Part of the deal includes the two companies working together to launch new ventures in India and Germany.

So, Mail.com Media Corporation (MMC) is done?  Hardly, but they do realize they need a new corporate identity since they no longer own the Mail.com domain.  You can expect MMC’s new branding efforts to reflect its focus on publishing digital content.  Among the sites that MMC operates are Deadline.com, OnCars.com, MovieLine.com and HollywoodLife.com.

All of the sources that I read say that the deal, although final price undisclosed, was worth $50-$100 million.  That’s a big range. 🙂
