Last week was tough and I wasn’t been able to be online for most of it as my Grandfather passed on Monday, then my girlfriend had an emergency appendectomy near the end of the week. Now that memorial services are complete and my girlfriend is home from the hospital, I found it necessary to write a blog post today. Problem is that today is opening day in the NFL (National Football League) and that’s all I can think about!
Being from Denver and living in Colorado my entire life I am a die hard Broncos fan. The Broncos went through some huge changes to their personnel in the off-season and many are not optimistic about our chances of competing in the AFC West division this year, but I won’t give up on them..yet. GO BRONCOS! [Edit my Broncos won in an exciting game!]
Many football players evolve into celebrities overnight. By the time a player realizes it is important it’s already too late, someone has registered the .com of their first + last name. I wanted to do a check around the league and see what alternative domains are being used by popular players ‘official websites’. Here are a few interesting ones that I found:
> Steeler’s 2009 SuperBowl QB Ben Roethlisberger: BigBen7.com – BenRoethlisberger.com resolves to a godaddy landing page
> Bengal’s Wide Receiver Chad ‘Ocho Cinco” Johnson: OchoCinco.com – ChadJohnson.com does not resolve
> Bronco’s Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall: BMarshall15.com – BrandonMarshall.com is a website for another person named Brandon Marshall
> Cardinal’s QB and SuperBowl Runner up in 2009 Kurt Warner: KurtWarner.org – KurtWarner.com is a parked page
> Raven’s Linebacker Ray Lewis: RayLewis52.com – RayLewis.com is a parked page
> Cowboy’s QB Tony Romo: TonyRomo9.com – TonyRomo.com does not resolve
Apparently the trend is for NFL players to add their jersey number after their name if they cannot register their own name in .com. I found it interesting that of the players official sites that I checked out today, only Kurt Warner uses an alternate extension (besides .com) for his official website. Not all of these players have settled for a different domain here are some top NFL players that have acquired their actual .com domain. No surprise to me that the list below are all future Hall of Famers (and top paid players around the league).
> Tom Brady – TomBrady.com
> Ladainian Tomlinson – LadainianTomlinson.com
> Brett Favre – BrettFavre.com
> Peyton Manning – PeytonManning.com
If you are a hard core NFL football fan, I wish you and your team the best. It will be tough season and I look forward to seeing the Bronco’s in the playoffs (I’ll keep dreaming until the first snap of the season in a few minutes 🙂 )
