Congrats to professional poker player Gus Hansen for winning GusHansen.com in UDRP recently. Being a poker player and fanatic myself I just had to share this news. Gus Hansen AKA ‘Gus the Great Dane’ is one of the most popular professional gamblers around because of his wild and aggressive betting strategy. Hansen has won over $9 million dollars playing tournament poker in World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour and online poker events. His official site is currently at GusHansenPoker.com. Hansen also runs other poker websites such as ThePlayr.com and GusHansenTV.com.
GusHansen.com was recovered by Gus Hansen through UDRP (Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy) in a WIPO decision against Mr. Yegen Kudashov, the original registrant. The WIPO panelists felt that the registrant used the domain in a manner that was recognizable to Gus Hansen. SafeNames (www.safenames.net), an online brand protection agent was able to demonstrate to the WIPO panel that Mr. Kudashov was using the domain in ‘bad faith’ with the intention to profit from the domain name by exploiting Gus Hansen.
Although Hansen did not own the trademark for GusHansen.com he did have a trademark for the commercial use of the name ‘Gus Hansen’. WIPO Panelists found that the Complainant (Hansen) has used his famous name ‘Gus Hansen’ in connection with the supply of various goods and services in trade or commerce. The panel felt that the registrant was using the domain in bad faith and trying to confuse visitors to that site. The admin contact for the GusHansen.com that Kudashov used was even Gus Hansen’s nickname @ gmail.com. Read the WIPO decision.
