Teresa Clarke, former Goldman Sachs director has decided to launch a geo portal for investment and travel information based around the her prized domain name: Africa.com. Clarke has been the registrant of Africa.com for several years but only recently she decided to use it to launch her African tech start up company with the premium keyword domain. The current site reportedly attracts only roughly 50k unique visitors. The vision for Africa.com includes many ideas like integrating the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, launch a Safari Finder program, offer detailed information and mapping for the World Cup among many other features.
Africa, while lagging behind other markets in web usage is experiencing high growth rates as technology continues to disperse. A mobile platform is expected to be rolled out along with the re-vamped site later this year. Mobile access to Africa.com will be especially important as it will be a more common means of web browsing in 2nd and 3rd world countries.
Kudos to Clarke for not selling her domain to offers from conglomerates and deciding to take a gamble and launch her own startup on a pure geo .com domain!
