This week’s DomainFest Conference in New York attracted quite a bit of media attention to the domain industry as a whole. I’ve seen more non domainer news sources publishing stories/blogs relating to domain names in the last few days than I can remember for a long time.
ADDED: Jeff Kupietzky of Oversee on CNBC (from earlier this summer)
ADDED: CNN Money Video Coverage!! (originally posted on ChefPatrick.com)
NYDailyNews.com Article: “Dot com bust: XXX.com, Alcohol.com among unsold names at DomainFest New York”
CNET TV Blog Post: “Top 5 Original .COM Domain Names”
PC World Article: “Choice Domain Names Pitched as Investments”
NYPost.com Article: “Amasser of hi$ domain”
UPI.com Article: “Tshirts.com Top Seller at URL Auction”
These are just a few articles that I read/watched this morning… Sure, after every major auction there is some coverage of the biggest sale. I just feel like the attention the media has been focusing on domain names as investments recently is a giant step forward for our the industry. Have you seen other non domainer media venues reporting on domain names?? feel free to share.

An unrelated note – I will be leaving for Mexico (Cancun, Puerta Vallarta… + more) early tomorrow morning and won’t be back for a week! I don’t expect to be working too much from the beach or from the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum. 🙂 E-mail will be the easiest way to get ahold of me. I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for the usage of the .MX country code within Mexico while I am there.. expect a blog post on that topic when I return.
It would be nice to see more industry coverage outside of the headlines of six-figure domain sales which are far from the industry norm.
I will await the post on the .mx domains. Enjoy yourself down there!
I think we are getting there Leonard. The PCWorld Article by Joab Jackson mentions the aftermarket and even goes on to deliver some Sedo.com Marketplace statistics from this year (which have been growing impressively). In another article from the set I listed, the NYDailyNews.com coverage included mentioning the lower rung sales. Even talks about the domain that sold for the least $$ look at the quote:
“One buyer, hoping to cash in on the MTV reality show phenomenon, scored a deal with JerseyShores.com.
The price: $300.”

The implications of these news sources writing about buying domain names for investment/resale on a smaller scale is a HUGE score for the industry, IMHO.
@Brian – Thanks bud! 🙂
It seems as of late the news media is sitting up and taking attention. As this news is disseminated to the general public, it will generate more news and attention to the industry as a whole. Nice job in providing links to the articles, thanx.
@Dean – no problem, I like the way you worded it better.
It’s great to see the media picking up on more domain industry stories. Enjoy your time in Mexico! I was in Tulum last year – that is place is the definition of paradise. I look forward to the article about .MX.
Thanks Nadia, now I’m really excited to see Tulum!
