LC Luxuries Limited subsidiary “US Cannabis” is reportedly close to acquiring the domain name and website WeedMaps.com. WeedMaps is an online community and tool that serves medical marijuana patients based on their location. Visitors to the website can look up dispensaries or they can search for a specific type of cannabis they want to buy by using the “WeedMenu” function. The WeedMap conveniently loads all of the information a pothead, I mean patient could possibly be looking for including detailed reviews, pricing, running specials, photos of product and more.
The domain name that resolves when typing in WeedMaps.com is actually www.legalmarijuanadispensary.com. No speculation whether or not that domain would be included in the sale or not. WeedMaps boasts over 43,000 medical marijuana patient members and currently tracks more than 15,000 products from over 600 dispensaries across the United States. Each dispensary featured on WeedMaps.com pays a monthly fee (low to mid $xxx) to be included to the WeedMap and Menu, the price each individual dispensary pays depends on the population of their store location. Additionally, @WeedMaps is the matching twitter account which is fairly active and has 3,580 followers.
The domain name WeedMaps.com ranks very low in Alexa, while the domain name the site resolves to “LegalMarijuanaDispensary.com” ranks 37,819 worldwide and 7,812 within the U.S. Compete.com estimates that LegalMarijuanaDispensary.com received over 118,000 visitors in the last month. The brand “WeedMaps” is great if I were looking at buying this property, I would make for sure the domain LegalMarijuanaDispensary.com was part of the deal.
Somewhat of a shameless plug, but this is actually the reason that we created http://CannaCentral.com/ . The WeedMaps business model seems to be largely based around the fact that they are currently the largest and most traffic MMJ directory site, and once your listing starts drawing traffic will demand that you pay them or remove you from their index.
Justin Silver: Since this is certainly not rocket science, we are trying to offer all of the same (and better!) features for free (listings, menus, alerts, locator tools, social features, etc) to keep the barrier to entry low as ultimately we want to provide a service to MMJ patients, and from a business perspective focusing on the marketing/advertising opportunities instead of what amounts to, at least to me, extortion.
Hopefully nice guys don’t always finish last
