Name.com Experimenting with New Tools in their Lab + Get Free Swag (if you’re fast)!

When I logged in to Name.com recently, I noticed the Name.com Labs button which sparked my curiosity.  I clicked on the button and was directed to the Name.com Laboratory where the clever folks at Name have shared some of the tools they are working on.  Most of these tools provide new and interesting ways to find domains names available to register.  Name has a disclaimer on the Labs page:

These projects are not quite ready for mainstream use and are currently in development so your mileage may vary. However, please feel free to explore them and send us your feedback.

So, check these cool tools out, no guarantee they will work 100% and if you like them or can think of something you would add or change give them your feedback – probably the best way is via their twitter @namedotcom or facebook.com/namedotcom.  So, what are they cooking up in the Name.com Lab anyway?

1) QR Code Generator and URL Shortener w/ Analytics – Not so new but hand tool you can use to create a qr code for your links or use the URL shortener with analytics.

2) Location Based Domain Search – Better than Godaddy’s version, this expandable search uses a keyword filter you can search for geo+keyword domain names that are available for your desired location, place or landmark.

3) Probably my favorite tool in the lab, another one that is used to find available domains is the Twitter Trends Search.  The default setting is on trending locations so you browse through a list of major cities, click on a city and it shows you the top 10 or so trending keywords for that location.. click on the keyword and it looks up the domains availability in all the top extensions.

4) Daily Domains is another way to search for available names.  In a huge tag cloud are keywords from the days news, twitter trends and other keywords.. click on the word and you are looking up it’s availability.

5) Wordnik Search finds available domains by using “weighted mutual information” and bi-grams of a keyword you choose to find available domains.

** If you’re still reading this post and live in the lower 48 U.S. (sorry no Hawaii or Alaska) I will send a free brand new Name.com Pint Glass and Rucksack (pictured above) to the first three (3) people that:

1) Leave a comment on this post with your favorite tool in the Name.com lab

2) Tweet OR Like this post (or both!)

3) Email [email protected] with your address (lower 48 U.S. only please!)

* Name did not pay/ask me to write this post, they don’t even know I’m writing it.  I just have enough of these cool pint glasses and handy bags leftover from RMDC to be able to giveaway to my readers, thought this would be a good post for it!
