Did Toni AKA ‘Lappanion’ Register the World’s Shortest Domain Name? -.kg

If you’ve spent any time on a domain forum it’s very likely you have come across a few posts by Toni, his user handle was and still is on some forums ‘Lappanion’.  Toni is truly one of the nicest and most honest guys in this industry I have had a chance to do business with. I usually find him on the Noomle forum… I may have not ever tried Noomle out before reading Toni’s recommendations.

On to the good stuff.  A couple weeks ago Toni posted on NamePros that he acquired a domain that has been mentioned as being one of the world’s shortest domains -.kg (that’s hyphen on your keyboard .kg which is Kyrgyzstan’s ccTLD).   When it comes to the domains brevity “Even the guiness book was mentioned in one article I read” Said said Toni  after he registered the domain name recently after the previous owner dropped it.  His first attempt to access the DNS was not successful, but just today he updated the thread and announced that in fact -.kg is now resolving.  I tried it out from my Android web browser when I read the news from my mobile device and it did not resolve.  When I got home I tried it out and sure enough I was able to access the domain.  Below is a screenshot of the page in case it doesn’t work for you and you don’t believe it. 😉

world's shortest domain name

Now the speculation.. Is this really a domain name?  Well, it appears the proof is right there on the screenshot, it’s live (at least it is confirmed live in several locations worldwide).  It’s a bit concerning that I cannot access the domain from certain browsers (mobile device, others?).  Why is this domain allowed to exist within the .kg registry but hyphens or other intermediary symbols are not allowed to exist in any other ccTLD?  Strange..  Anyone have some more insight on this type of domain name??

  • Hi Mike,

I’m Poet from NP. Nice article, congrats. Anyway Toni’s username is ‘Lappanion’. See you at NP.

  • Hai folks,

i know toni very well. i am an np guy too.
    congrats toni.

but i found someware a domain like this. http://.to just the extension only.
its a url shortner website. i really forget the address. let me find it.
so will this not be the shortest name?

  • On Chrome -> It’s not working, it redirects me on Google with a search for “www.-.kg”

On IE 8 -> It displays an “HTTP 400 Bad Request” error.

    I’m on Windows 7.

This domain name should be mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most unreachable domain ever as well

  • @zamaan – Interesting, let us know if you find it!

@OuMun – Thanks for letting us know how it works on other browsers.. that is the main problem I see with this domain so far.. its inaccessibility from certain browsers.

  • Mike thanks for these nice intro-words :),

    sounds like you mean it…hehe.

The domain is currently not resolving because I am trying with Rachid to get it to work at Noomle as well (the page you saw yesterday was on my friends server – he changed the servers DB to allow hyphen only domains) so today I changed the A-Record which gave me a “Bad Request Error” and now the NS are pointing again towards Noomle (just waiting to finally hit the “Noomle Engine”), let’s see if Rachid can get it to work, he said he has a plan…

However I don’t see a solution for the Chrome issue mentioned by OuMun above, I am redirected to google right away, I tested it on a few browsers yesterday (Safari, FF, IE) and it worked.

Oh, and I got 2 corrections to your post Mike:

    1. “he believes he now owns the worlds shortest domain name.”

I don’t believe this since there are shorter domains (IDNs if you disregard the Puny-code, around 20 domains on the net like http://www.kg, also debatable is if a hyphnen only domain would be shorter then a 1 digit or 1 letter domain)

I was merely quoting other people, posts and articles in this thread, I never claimed this statement to be true, there is indeed a good amount of posts and websites mentioning this one as the shortest domain in the world (mainly in german)..

    2. “Toni mentioned the domain is actually mentioned in a Guinness Book of World Records as the shortest domain ever.”

I don’t think it made it into the Guiness Book (yet, lol!) what I said was: “even the guiness book was mentioned in one article I read”.

I don’t recall where exactly I read it but it was a german article and it was about a guy applying with his 63 character domain as the longest in the world but got rejected, then they mentioned -.kg and said this one however seems to belong in the Guiness Book…

    Cheers
    Toni 🙂
