GR.com is the newest two letter .com country code (Greece) that will become a second level domain registry through the CentralNic.com platform. November 30th marks the opening of the sunrise period for the .GR.com domain. The landrush phase starts in January and the according to domain.gr.com there will be no premium registrations held back by the registry. So, every subdomain that is not reserved by trademark owners during the sunrise period will be available to register by anyone, anywhere. That includes premium keywords like: business.gr.com, travel.gr.com, poker.gr.com, blog.gr.com, etc…
Greece already has the ccTLD .GR, .com.GR, .net.GR and .org.GR however, GR.com has no geographic limitations on registration and ends with .com. Here is a list provided by GR.com of who they think should be interested in a GR.com subdomain:
• Anyone wanting keyword domains
• Any organization using the word “Group” in its name
• Greek and Cypriot registrants
• Anyone wishing to do business in Greece or Cyprus
• Registrants in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Grand Rapids? Sorry that’s a bit of a stretch. I’m sure there will be a good amount of keyword registrations during the landrush phase of the rollout. It appears this is another two letter .com subdomain that will be sold by CentralNic.com that they don’t actually own the domain. Most of the two letter .com names they sell subdomains on they do own including US.com, UK.com, GB.com, SE.com, etc..
