Headlines: Frank Schilling’s Name Administration Acquires BlackFridaySales.com

  • The domain name BlackFridaySales.com has been purchased via Sedo.com for $90,000.  The acquiring party? Frank Schilling’s company Name Administration Inc.  Name Admin was also in the news after they recently defended the domain DealBook.com in a landmark UDRP decision.
  • Calvin Ayre recently blogged about how content he is with his 5.5 million dollar purchase of slots.com and how it also may have been one of the best and well timed investments he’s ever made.  From Calvin’s blog post: “Still, even at $5.5m, I’m convinced the Slots.com price was a steal. It’s the strongest gaming-related domain out there and just a very cool domain to turn into a global brand.”
  • Effective July 1, 2011, Afilias the .info registry will increase the cost of a .info domain to $7.42. It’s been $6.75 for the last three years but it looks like Afilias will be exercising it’s contract option to raise the prices by 10% this year.  Ever since 2008, the registry has been offering huge discounts on new registrations (as low as $1 on godaddy).  Neustar’s .biz pricing will also increase by $0.45 up to $7.30/each starting  in April 2011.
  • Overstock continues to go after ‘O’ domains after their recent o.co.za acquisition via Sedo.  They are fully expected to go after o.co.uk which is may be available to them during the sunrise period of one and two character .co.uk domains which Nominet, the .uk registry will open on Dec. 1st.
  • Senator Patrick Leahy on Sept. 19th introduced the Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act (COICA). This legislation would allow the government to use court orders to shut down copyright infringing websites with the consent of the judicial district in which the domain name registrar is located.  This bill has sparked a huge debate and has already been blocked in the Senate.  This type of legislation would give government too much control over the world wide web and could undermine the current domain name system.   • Elliot Silver’s DomainQuestions.com is being utilized by many domainers looking for answers to questions.  This week already there have been dozens of questions asked and most questions being asked are getting good, helpful answers from a knowledgeable sources. I think a good way to help the site run smoothly is to try and make a point to answer a question or two if you are using the site to ask your questions.
