Apple Acquires iCloudiPhone.com

Last month there was a lot of buzz around the possibility that Apple will soon introduce an iPhone that has significantly less storage on the actual device but will instead rely on the new iCloud service to stream content.  The iCloud iPhone will likely be a very popular product when launched as it will offer a lower cost alternative to the standard iPhone.

Earlier this month the registrant information for domain name iCloudiPhone.com was changed over to reflect it is now owned by Apple Inc.  The iCloudiPhone.com domain was registered on April 29th, the same day that it was confirmed Apple had acquired iCloud.com.  It’s unknown who the previous registrant (was under whois protection) or what kind of deal was made for this domain.  I suspect Apple threatened with a lawsuit and the registrant turned it over for a nominal amount of money.  Knowing they now have the domain, expect to see the iCloud iPhone in stores just in time for Christmas shopping season.

Other domain names that were registered on April 29th of this year or shortly after are the domains iPhoneiCloud.com, iCloudPhone.com and iPhoneCloud.com.  None of these names are under whois protection and I think all of these registrants are asking for trouble especially the iphonecloud.com registrant who has the domain parked with all kinds of iPhone keywords.  One other name I think will benefit from typo traffic is iCouldiPhone.com (this name was registered last month the same day the iCloudiPhone news broke).  I did it about a dozen times just writing this article – every time I went to type in icloud, I typed in icould.
