What To Do With The First Ever Registered Domain?

The domain name Symbolics.com was originally registered by Symbolics Inc back in 1985.  It was the first domain name ever registered.  Just this month, XF Investments (U.S.) acquired the domain for an undisclosed sum.  This landmark acquisition is big news in the domain industry, and has been all the talk this week.

Aron Meystedt, CEO of XF Investments  said this about their recent acquisition:

“For us to own the first domain is very special to our company, and we feel blessed for having the ability to obtain this unique property.”

Here is the new entry page for Symbolics.com. It looks like a simple wordpress theme displaying some info about domain names in general and also showcases XF’s projects.  I am a little disappointed that it is already being monetized with adsense ads in the top right column.  This just looks kind of tacky on the first registered domain in history!  Well it’s not my domain name and I commend XF Investments for going after such a prestigious piece of virtual property. The new owners said that there are plans for Symbolics.com and hinted at unveiling some sort of business model around the domain on March 15, 2010  – the day that Symbolics.com turns twenty five years old.

After visiting Symbolics.com entry page I asked myself; What would I do with the first ever domain name?  Honestly, that’s not an easy question.  Seems like too special of a name to slap a blog or a business front on.  I originally thought it would be a great name to use for a  high end domain/website or even art brokerage firm.  Using the first ever domain for a business like this would give the business built in trustability and recognition.  Ultimately, I think that the domain will be developed into a business or resold to an end user.  I am intrigued to see what happens with the web site in March, 2010.
