I wrote last month about Dan Wheldon, this year’s Indy 500 champion teamed up with GoDaddy.com to bring the GoDaddy Indy Car Challenge to the Las Vegas Indy 300. The sweepstakes would have awarded Wheldon and one fan an even split of the $5 million prize if he took first place.
That race took place today in Las Vegas and as a result of a 15 car accident on the 11th lap of the race, Dan Wheldon was killed as his Indy car #77 was launched into a sidewall during the wreck. This was the first fatality in an Indy Car race since 2006. Very sad day for auto racing fans. Wheldon was 33 and left behind a wife and two young children.
Just the other day Dan Wheldon had published a blog post in the USAToday talking about the upcoming race and the GoDaddy Indy Car Challenge and Sweepstakes.
Bob Parsons left this message on GoDaddy’s Facebook page today:
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dan Wheldon’s family and friends on this sad, sad day. All of us in the IndyCar Series family feel an unexplainable sense of loss. Not just for the sport, but for all who knew Dan Wheldon. Dan was a family man, a father, a husband, a son and a brother. The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner was also a competitor and a colleague … our deepest condolences go out to all who knew Dan.”
