Newsweek Stopping Print Edition, Moving to Digital Only

Starting in 2013, you will only be able to read a Newsweek publication online.  The U.S. weekly news magazine announced today that it will no longer publish its print version with the last print publication going out on December 31st, 2012.  Not only is it ceasing print publications but will rebrand to Newsweek Global.

Two years ago Newsweek partnered with The Daily Beast a popular online magazine which brought strong Internet experience and traffic to the table.  The domain name Newsweek.com forwards to www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek.html.

Newsweek CEO Baba Shetty said the online publication now gets over 15 million unique visitors per month, a 70% increase in the last year.  The dramatic increase in online news reading by viewers via apps, social outlets and on websites makes it necessary for them to focus all efforts online apparently.

So, it seems this is it for the 80 year old U.S. publication. No more U.S. Newsweek, no more Newsweek.com. I’m willing to bet in six months you won’t even find a newsweek logo anywhere on the website, just a forwarded domain name.  It’s no secret print news media (and online news) is taking a beating.  Which do you think will be the next to fall?

  • NOW, if they and everyone else would give me an oral version that I can download to my phone, you got a winning deal. I can run and listen to the news at the same time.
